Julie De Kezel
*1995, Ghent, Belgium
The main focus of Julie De Kezel’s practice is the comprehension of biodiverse microorganisms and how they connect in a contemporary atmosphere.
Through ongoing experimentation, the organisms take form in installations; containing drawings, new media, found or recreated nature, wearable objects and textile; enriched by the inclusion of sensory components such as scent, local vegetation, sound and light.
Kezel’s installations serve as conduits for diverse experiences, offering glimpses into the lives of the selected organisms, as well as shedding light on lesser-known aspects of Western subcultures and folklore. By engaging with the audience, her works bring to life the often overlooked interactions between these hidden topics and the public consciousness.
She uses visual stimuli drawn from art historical research, to bring new light to subjects such as myxomycetes, Moss, Mycelium, nature related folklore, diy-culture, fantasy based-games.
